The primary objective of this Action Group is to create a platform for the development, testing, and cross-validation of MDO capabilities that align with the aircraft design life cycle prevalent in the industry. This platform seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and industry practices by educating researchers about industry requirements while facilitating the transfer of MDO-related innovative concepts from research to the aircraft industry sector. In this way, the platform aims to provide industry and research with a common basis for evaluating, comparing, and advancing MDO methods and tools.

The DLR-F25 configuration
This Action Group contributes to aligning the MDO research activities with industry requirements, allowing gradual and seamless transition between single-disciplinary optimization and MDO and constructing a platform for cross-validating MDO capabilities among participants. The MDO Benchmark is based on the DLR-F25 configuration, which is a next-generation, short to medium range, narrow-body airliner, with several advanced technologies, such as very high aspect ratio wings (HARW), fuselage-mounted main landing gear, and ultra-high bypass ratio engines.
The proposed work will be divided into four tasks:
Task 1: Structure design optimization under multidisciplinary requirements
- Structure sizing optimization for fixed wing planform
- Structure sizing optimization for free wing planform
Task 2: Aerodynamic design optimization under multidisciplinary requirements
- Aerodynamic optimization for fixed wing planform and rear fuselage
- Aerodynamic optimization for free wing planform and rear fuselage
Task 3: Robust aerodynamic design optimization under uncertainty quantification
Task 4: MDO considering industrial requirements
